If 2010 turns out to be the beginning of the end of the Islamic Republic of Iran, it may well be because of the death of one of the regime’s founders, a man I met three decades ago in Tehran’s infamous Evin prison.

In 1977, I was a 27-year-old rebel arrested for being "detrimental to the security of the nation." In those days nearly all critics of the shah’s regime were incarcerated under this category. Evin’s L-shaped brick prison blocks were packed with regime opponents, mostly Marxists, leftists, and university students. The facility was also home to a handful of the most famous future leaders of the Islamic Revolution, including future president Ali Akbar Hashemi Rafsanjani and future grand ayatollah Hossein Ali Montazeri.

It was a relatively good time to be in Evin, as the shah nervously attempted to placate his most fervent enemies by following Jimmy Carter’s human rights policies. Instead of being allowed only an hour of fresh air…

As with anything in politics, there should be room for a lively debate about Christiane Amanpour’s recent appointment to host ABC’s This Week. Legitimate arguments can be made both for and against the decision to hire an acclaimed foreign correspondent to do a Sunday morning show that previously focused on domestic issues. And employees at ABC are well within their right to be miffed at the network’s decision to pay top dollar for a star like Amanpour at the same time they are scaling back and laying off long-time employees.

But what cannot be countenanced is accusing her of bias based only on insinuations about her Iranian heritage. The attacks on Amanpour follow in a long line of Iranophobic attempts to keep qualified Iranian Americans out of the public sphere in America, and it should be called out for what it is: anti-Iranian bigotry.

As one of the most prominent and well-respected Americans of Iranian descent, the attacks on Amanpour…

Green Brief #95

By Codeman177 – http:/twitter.com/codeman177

Since Niteowl has started posting on his own blog, I have asked if I could begin publishing the Green Brief so that everyone on wwp would once again have a summary of the day’s news from Iran. I, like Niteowl, have gotten all of my information from reliable tweets and am not reporting any information that I could not confirm.

Sorry for my extended absence, my unit was activated for an extended period of time due to flooding.

I will let you guys know all the news after my conversation with him tomorrow….Peace.

—— edited by Michael the German, reason below ——

The reason: Ramin, just to be sure that now he’s been released they can’t find information in the post that could confirm something they weren’t sure of before. Ok? Just in case - Let’s be careful for his sake! Better a little too paranoid than endanger him by accident now. If you think completely different send me a direct message to tell me, but I believe better safe than sorry when it’s about his security. No dates and no places, do you…

Simin Behbahani is 82 years old, nearly blind, and the most celebrated living poet in Iran. She is also, since early this month, a prisoner in her own country.

On March 8, on her way to an International Women’s Day event in Paris, she was stopped by authorities at the airport in Tehran. Interogated. Stripped of her passport. And summoned to court on unnamed charges.

Behbahani has written some of the most beautiful and powerful Iranian poetry of the last century. But she apparently looks like a threat to the regime in Iran.

This hour, On Point: the poet as prisoner in her own country.

Oslo

In Iran’s controversial election last June, the job of certifying absentee ballots in Norway fell to Mohammed Reza Heydari. The senior diplomat had always considered himself a loyal official of the Islamic Republic of Iran.

The vote showed the opposition candidate beating President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad, a result that Mr. Heydari duly certified. Shortly thereafter, Iranian intelligence agents threatened him with discipline.

They also asked him to be an informant on Iranian expatriates—including his 17-year-old son, he said, because he had marched in antigovernment protests. Mr. Heydari refused.

By January, the slight and balding veteran of the Iran-Iraq War had resigned as chief consular official at the Iranian Embassy in Oslo. He requested and received political asylum, citing threats against him and his family.

Mr. Heydari witnessed up close Iran’s effort to crush protests and skew the vote in last year’s historic election. His description…

An Iranian cleric said on Friday that the Islamic Republic intends to rescue the American people from the two parties that have ruled the country in the past.

"We should focus our efforts on freeing Americans from under the yoke of the two ruling parties (Democratic and Republican) in the United States. We want to save the West and spread morality in the world," Tehran’s interim Friday Prayers leader Hojjatoleslam Kazem Seddiqi said.

"We should concentrate our efforts on the international revolution and rescuing nations from the rule of arrogant powers," he added.

The cleric criticized US President Barack Obama for pursuing the same policies of his predecessor George W. Bush in the Middle East.

"Today, there is more insecurity in Iraq than the time of [former Iraqi dictator] Saddam Hussein," he said.

"Despite US promises, no economic development has been made in Iraq. They (US officials) even interfere in Iraq’s domestic…
